Review

Our Score
A very average wartime John Wayne feature, singing the praises of the American Volunteer Group, the mercenaries who fought for China's freedom against superior Japanese forces in the days before Pearl Harbor. Director David Miller provides some well-staged action sequences, but Wayne and his co-star John Carroll struggle with the contrived plot. This kind of adventure would have benefited from a major studio and the combined star power of, say, Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable. The Victor Young score helps a bit, but this is only routine fare.

Summary

However, he has to contend with the consequences when the actions of an arrogant hotshot pilot lead to the death of a fellow veteran airman.
