Our Score
This American remake of the 2007 UK-set farce is superior in every way. Chris Rock stars as the responsible brother who locks horns with successful younger sibling Martin Lawrence during their father's funeral. But that's just the start. Middle-class family tensions abound: a nervous Zoë Saldana (Avatar) calms her anxious boyfriend (X-Men's James Marsden) with a pill that turns out to be a hallucinogenic; a man appears (Peter Dinklage, reprising his role from the original movie) who claims to have known the deceased very well; widow Loretta Devine still finds time to harangue her daughter-in-law (Regina Hall) for not supplying a grandchild. The hugely tangled web is teased out with sizzle from a fantastic cast (which also includes Tracy Morgan, Danny Glover and Luke Wilson) and snap from director Neil LaBute, who is better known for hard-hitting dramas such as In the Company of Men and Lakeview Terrace. This may not be comedy at its most sublime but it moves at a cracking pace and high production values add gloss to the otherwise broad slapstick antics.

Summary

A family gather to bury the patriarch, but any dignity to the occasion soon disappears in a run of disasters. The deceased's oldest son resents the success of his younger brother, while their sister's boyfriend has accidentally taken LSD and an unexpected guest has a few shock revelations to make. Comedy, with Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence, Zoe Saldana and Peter Dinklage.
