Our Score
Writer/director Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) has created his own stilted, downbeat magical-realist world, in which characters often stare straight ahead and sit in uniform rows. From that rich seam comes a grand, spiritual "rail movie" in which three brothers unite for a trip across India, a year after the death of their father. Owen Wilson is the controlling eldest son, Adrien Brody the middle child (and a beatific father-to-be), while co-writer Jason Schwartzman's the angst-ridden, randy youngest. The Darjeeling Limited may be largely set and shot in India - gloriously photographed by Anderson regular Robert Yeoman and largely scored using existing Indian film soundtracks - but we are unmistakeably in Anderson country. Less maddeningly esoteric than his previous film, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, it nonetheless meanders from incident to incident in tune with the siblings' faltering trajectory towards emotional closure and a reunion at a remote mission with their mother (Anjelica Huston, another Anderson favourite). This is a handsome, intriguing and subtly funny character study that almost leads to enlightenment.
