Our Score
Richards Burton and Harris, Roger Moore and Hardy Kruger are evidently enjoying themselves in this all-action adventure. They play ageing mercenaries hired by Stewart Granger to rescue a deposed African president and put him back in power, all for the sake of big-business interests - a plot similar to Frederick Forsyth's The Dogs of War. Politically it's a dog's dinner of woolly liberalism and right-wing rhetoric - it was filmed in South Africa during the height of apartheid - but, as a firework display, the movie is often exciting. And the supporting cast of venerable British character actors - including Jack Watson, Ronald Fraser and Kenneth Griffith - get into the spirit of things just as much as the above-the-title stars.

A corporation hoping to bring about the downfall of an African dictator hires a group of British mercenaries to free a political prisoner dangerous to the regime. However, when the company changes its plans and makes a deal with the tyrant, the soldiers and the man they have saved are left surrounded by hostile military forces with no escape route. Action adventure, starring Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris and Hardy Kruger.
