Cardiff-born Ivor Novello was once the pin-up boy of British stage and screen. But he was also a gifted tunesmith and playwright. Indeed, he penned the West End hit on which this old-fashioned romantic melodrama was based. Novello also stars, as the exiled Russian aristocrat who sews dissent in cockney Eliot Makeham's dour working-class household, and radiates an insouciant charm, especially in his dealings with the family's shop-assistant daughter, Ursula Jeans. It's all directed with a teasingly respectable salaciousness by Maurice Elvey, but of much greater interest to most film fans will be the pre-fame performances of Jack Hawkins and Ida Lupino.

A woman takes in a homeless Russian aristocrat, whose wealth and reputation transforms her family's lives. Romantic comedy, starring Ivor Novello and Ursula Jeans.
