Review

Our Score
1940s favourite Susan Hayward could turn on the tears like a tap, and here gives one of her least mechanical performances as the wife and mother unhappily married to Kent Smith and remembering past moments with pilot Dana Andrews. Written by Julius J and Philip G Epstein (co-scripters with Howard Koch of Casablanca) from a JD Salinger short story, this weepie has the customary gloss associated with its producer, Samuel Goldwyn, but the direction (by Mark Robson) never really achieves the emotional depth required. Sadly, Salinger was so unhappy with this adaptation that he decided against agreeing to any further films of his work. The Catcher in the Rye was published two years later.
