The Last Blitzkrieg

The Last Blitzkrieg

Arthur Dreifuss (1958)

Our Score
Looking around for a Hollywood actor to play the English-speaking son of a top Nazi general, producer Sam Katzman should never have settled for Van Johnson, whose lightweight presence destroys the picture. Although this was filmed in Holland and uses some local players and crew, the obvious reliance on stock battle footage further undermines credibility. The plot has Johnson leading a sabotage squad masquerading as Americans behind Allied lines. Other against-type casting sees the usually heroic Kerwin Mathews (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) as a vicious Nazi and Bewitched star Dick York playing it straight as a square-jawed American sergeant.

The son of a Nazi general is selected for a secret undercover mission. He and his men disguise themselves as American soldiers and go behind the Allied lines, with the intention of carrying out acts of sabotage and undermining enemy morale. Second World War drama, starring Van Johnson and Kerwin Mathews.
