Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Villainy is all very well if you can carry it off with a smile, smooth out misunderstandings with a mellifluous voice and look as handsome as Ronald Colman does here playing the elusive AJ Raffles. This urbane adaptation of EW Hornung's The Amateur Cracksman makes the toff thief amusingly likeable, a rogue with charm unless you're his victim, of course. A romantic crime adventure from directors Harry d'Abbadie D'Arrast and George Fitzmaurice, this is a fascinating curio from a gentler age.
