How to Start a Peaceful Revolution would be a more precise title for this valuable profile of 88-year-old pacifist academic Gene Sharp. An expert on non-violent rebellion, Sharp's "handbook for insurrectionists", From Dictatorship to Democracy, has been translated into more than 30 languages. Influenced by Gandhi and Einstein, he advocates the use of psychological, social and economic weapons as substitutes for physical conflict. "Unless they have alternatives to violence and war, they'll return to violence and war. Every time," he says.

There's a calm wisdom in his words, as he gently tends the orchids in his greenhouse. A lovely metaphor for how societies should be cultivated.
