Mr Right

In an intermittently engaging leftfield love story, Pitch Perfect's Anna Kendrick stars as quirky, let-down and put-upon Martha, who thinks she's finally met the man of her dreams in silver-tongued, twinkly-eyed Francis (Sam Rockwell). Except he's really a hired killer trying to stay one step ahead of a fellow assassin and former colleague (Tim Roth), tasked by a crime cartel to snuff out her beau and anyone else who gets in their way. Director Paco Cabezas and writer Max Landis (American Ultra) flaunt their influences a little too brazenly, notably the unlikely lovers scenario of Out of Sight and the hitman romcom japes of Grosse Pointe Blank, but fall short in terms of both films' zest and style. Ultimately it's a generic exercise, what a few years ago would have been pegged as "sub-Tarantino", where the level of violence seems disproportionate to the intended cuteness of the storyline. Kendrick is a passable heroine doing her best with an underwritten role, so it's left to Rockwell's easy manner and raffish charm to shoulder the heavy lifting.
