Our Score
There's lots of furry fun to be had in this familiar canine caper, despite the overstretched plot being overpopulated with too many crazy characters. The latest comic frolic from the team responsible for Despicable Me and Minions finds self-obsessed terrier Max (voiced by Louis CK) forced to share his Manhattan home with rescue mongrel Duke (Eric Stonestreet). Their initial enmity finds them slipping the leash and crossing paths with dog catchers and an underground resistance movement of unwanted pets intent on freeing all animals from their domestic shackles. Luckily, Max's friends galvanise themselves to investigate his disappearance in an adventure that's stylishly realised and vibrantly rendered but less the sum of its antic action parts for being too indebted to other animation hits (Bolt and Flushed Away among them). But neat references to the likes of Grease, Some Like It Hot and Saturday Night Fever help the relentlessly childish humour hit the adult spot before the storyline runs out of steam.

When rivalry leaves them cast adrift on the streets of New York, two bickering hounds must put their differences aside and pull together. Animated adventure from the makers of Despicable Me, featuring the voices of Louis CK, Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart.
