Drama starring Chris Evans. Frank has raised his niece Mary, a maths prodigy, to be as "normal" as possible. Then Mary's snobbish grandmother suddenly arrives, sparking a difficult custody battle.
Chris Evans adopts a change of pace from his Captain America heroics in this charming, heartfelt family drama that tells the story of a child prodigy. Evans plays Frank, a boat repairman who is raising his niece, Mary (Mckenna Grace), a seven-year-old maths genius. Frank wants to make sure Mary's childhood is relatively normal, so he sends her to an ordinary school. However, their lives are complicated when Frank becomes embroiled in a custody battle with Mary's estranged grandmother(Lindsay Duncan), who believes the girl should attend a specialised school in order to reach her full potential. A certain predictability aside, Gifted has some lovely scenes and is surprisingly affecting in places. Duncan ensures that her character doesn't feel like a hateful, one-dimensional villain, while Evans is a likeable and engaging presence throughout.
