The producer-director team of Michael Relph and Basil Dearden had already brought their rather smug, stolid approach to Britain's growing black community in Sapphire. Here they tackle the jazz scene, overlaid with a plot about sexual jealousy that culture vultures may recognise as Othello. At the centre of it all is jazz singer Marti Stevens, married to Paul Harris and desired by Patrick McGoohan, jazzmen both. It's shot like a moody film noir and its main appeal is the chance to spot hot jazzmen like Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Tubby Hayes and Britain's own Johnny Dankworth in the frequent musical interludes. The main incongruity is Richard Attenborough as a man about town.

The manipulative, over-ambitious drummer of a jazz group tries to ruin its leader's marriage, hoping the resulting fall-out will allow him to take control. Drama loosely based on Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, starring Patrick McGoohan, Betsy Blair, Richard Attenborough and Keith Michell.
