Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In the near future, three cash-strapped people are hired as supervisors in a secure underground facility where gifted children are being raised in a virtual reality. But their talents and lack of interaction with the real world also make them more dangerous in this cautionary tale that tackles modern schooling issues and refreshes terror-tot fiction like Village of the Damned. Director Martin Owen (who once featured in kids TV show Byker Grove) offers a clever, modern twist on the old formula that's enhanced by the visual gimmick of everyone wearing "augmented reality glasses" thereby immersing us in their digital surroundings. Their interactions with Arial, a Siri-type swirl of neon colours, is the only interface with the mysterious patrons of this social (or antisocial) experiment. It's their inability to see what's really going on that gives this surreal horror film an engaging creepy strangeness... However, we can see where the plot is headed from very early on.
