The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel

The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel

Our Score
Leslie Howard had such a hit with The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1934 that Alexander Korda immediately ordered a sequel - for far less than the budget of the original. The script was hashed by many hands and was intended to carry parallels with Hitler's Germany. A second-rung German director, Hanns Schwarz, was brought in and barely survived the production. After Howard turned the part down to play in a little something called Gone with the Wind, the role of Sir Percy Blakeney went to Barry K Barnes, a stage actor who made his screen debut. Being a Korda production, it looks handsome enough, but that's the best one can say. A second sequel (The Elusive Pimpernel), by Powell and Pressburger, also bombed in 1950.

The mysterious hero fights to save his wife and other assorted French aristocrats from the guillotine in Revolutionary Paris. Swashbuckling period adventure, starring Barry K Barnes, Sophie Stewart, Margaretta Scott and James Mason.
