This captivating, Oscar-winning documentary paints an intimate portrait of Amy Winehouse, the troubled singer/songwriter who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of just 27. Charting her stratospheric rise to fame, the film celebrates Amy's short yet eventful career, reminding us that she was a highly talented musician with a distinctive voice, as well as tabloid fodder. At the same time, British film-maker Asif Kapadia (who also made the superb
) doesn't shy away from the personal problems she faced, as he also details her well-publicised battles with drinking and drugs. To his credit, Kapadia has amassed a wealth of archive footage, which includes several private videos that haven't been seen before. These are complemented by revealing voiceover interviews with various individuals, such as Amy's friends, her parents, and an assortment of industry professionals. The end result is moving, sobering and heartbreaking, providing us with a non-judgemental film about a young woman who endured more than her fair share of judgement.
