Now you see it, now you don't in this horror where a family is terrorised by a visitation that only comes out in the dark. Turn the lights back on, and the ghoul goes out of sight again... but not out of mind. It's a conceit that most horror films take for granted, but it becomes a hugely effective scare-making device here, and director David F Sandberg (adapting his own short, which went viral on the web) does a terrific job of traumatising Teresa Palmer's errant, metal-head big sister and her plucky little brother Gabriel Bateman who both suspect the unwelcome visitor is related to their mentally fragile mother (Maria Bello). Sandberg isn't altogether sympathetic towards the troubled woman and the plotting gets dismayingly sketchier the more we learn about the backstory. It does, however, make the most of its elusive yet terrifying ghoul. Viewers who are sensitive to sudden loud noises are in for a particularly torrid time. And when was the last time a film made you shop for lightbulbs?
