CIA operative Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) team up in this lame origin story inspired by the popular Swinging Sixties TV series. Their boring joint mission is to stop an evil fashionista couple destabilising the world with nuclear weapons. Director Guy Ritchie piles on self-conscious hipness and half-hearted action in this mismatched Bond meets La Dolce Vita affair that motors through every tiresome spy-fi cliché from The Ipcress File to Austin Powers. Completely lacking the charm or light touch the spoof espionage show had, Cavill and Hammer are poor substitutes for original leads Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, failing to make their building camaraderie through constant competitiveness either believable or enjoyable. Alicia Vikander looks dolly bird perfect as the estranged daughter of "Hitler's favourite rocket scientist", but the straining pop art production design and heavy-handed genre-blurring only results in a frantic, thrown-together mess.

A CIA agent is forced into an uneasy alliance with his arch-rival in the KGB at the height of the Cold War. A criminal organisation is planning to alter the balance of power by making nuclear weapons widely available, and the two spies must work together to foil the plan. Action adventure based on the 1960s TV series, starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander and Hugh Grant.
