Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

An award winner at Cannes, this Icelandic oddity tells the story of Gummi (Sigurdur Sigurjonsson) and Kiddi (Theodor Juliusson) who are sheep-rearing rivals and haven't spoken to each other in 40 years - quite a feat considering they're also brothers and neighbours in a remote farming valley. Director Grimur Hakonarson's tragicomic look at a threat to their ancient livelihood is informed by his intimate knowledge of the area. Credible, hilarious and poignant by turns, Rams is a keenly detailed, well-paced and entertaining tale of family dynamics heightened by two of Iceland's most respected actors in Juliusson and Sigurjonsson and the work of cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grovlen (Victoria). In a frozen world of men without women, heritage bloodlines and emotional desperation, there are memorable moments of amusement, including the use of a messenger sheep dog - deemed the best way, by far, to send notes to estranged relatives.
