The surviving members of a family come to terms with the loss of their late wife and mother, an acclaimed war photographer. Drama, starring Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert and Jesse Eisenberg
This delicate, mournful drama follows a family that is haunted by loss. The story takes place three years after the death of Isabelle (Isabelle Huppert), a renowned war photographer who was killed in a car accident. Her husband, Gene (Gabriel Byrne), is concerned about his youngest son, Conrad (Devin Druid), a withdrawn teenager who barely speaks. Is Conrad ready to hear the truth about his mother's death? Gene wants to tell him what really happened, but Conrad's older brother, Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg), thinks that this is a bad idea. As the story unfolds, it moves through a series of flashbacks and dream sequences, showing us how each person had a unique relationship with Isabelle. You could argue that the film lacks focus, but it has plenty of potent scenes that ring true, and these combine to form a sensitive, quietly absorbing drama about grief and memory.
