Alec Guinness earned an Oscar nomination for his droll adaptation of Joyce Cary's celebrated novel. He also turns in a solid performance as Gulley Jimson, the irascible, self-obsessed artist whose decision to paint a mural arouses the curiosity of friends and foes alike. John Bratby's paintings cleverly reflect the character's temperament and they have been beautifully shot by Arthur Ibbetson, whose use of colour is painterly indeed. The problem is that the focus is so firmly on Guinness that the other characters are rather left on the sideline. A quirky, patchy film, but not without its pleasures.

An egotistical artist is filled with an all-consuming ambition to paint a masterpiece - and live life in the lap of luxury. However, his determined attempts to find a wealthy patron serve only to reduce his friends' lives to chaos. Black comedy, starring Alec Guinness, Kay Walsh, Renee Houston, Michael Gough and Robert Coote.
