Review

Our Score
Writer/director Anna Muylaert provides a witty insight into Brazilian domestic affairs, telling the story of a complacent Sao Paulo family whose pampered existence is jeopardised by the arrival of housekeeper Regina Casé's teenage daughter (Camila Mardila). With doctor husband Lourenço Mutarelli and schoolboy son Michel Joelsas quickly becoming besotted by their feted visitor, mum Karine Teles tries to assert her authority. Similar in socio-satirical tone to Chilean drama The Maid (2009), this is a smartly written and knowingly played study of maternal instinct across the class divide that makes deft use of twinned and mirrored traits and incidents as the seemingly parallel storylines edge together. Despite sharing many hopes, fears and prejudices, Casé and Teles make for fascinating contrast, while the manipulatively mutinous Mardila exposes the crass chauvinism of the impotently macho Mutarelli and haplessly immature Joelsas.
