Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This elegant, understated drama is a story of hope and tragedy. Adapted from Lewis Grassic Gibbon's classic novel, it begins at the turn of the 20th century, on a remote, windswept farm in rural Aberdeenshire. There, we find Chris Guthrie (model-turned-actress Agyness Deyn), a young woman whose life is plagued by hardship and suffering. When we first meet her, Chris is living with her father (Peter Mullan), a monstrous, violent man who runs the family estate. She eventually marries a kind farmer named Ewan (Kevin Guthrie), but her happiness is short-lived due to the outbreak of the First World War. All of this is superbly acted by Deyn, Mullan and Guthrie, and it is beautifully crafted by writer/director Terence Davies (The Deep Blue Sea). Unfortunately, though, certain plot developments are unconvincing (Ewan feels like a totally different character after the war), while the film portrays Chris as a rather passive heroine. As a result, it falls short of greatness.
