Jem and the Holograms

This musical drama based on a 1980s cartoon charts the rags-to-riches story of Jerrica Benton (Aubrey Peeples), a teenage girl who decides to film herself while performing a song in her bedroom.Later that night, her sister uploads the video to YouTube, and it goes viral in a very short space of time. The next morning, influential music executive Erica Raymond (Juliette Lewis) signs up Jerrica and her three siblings to do shows in LA. As the girls move into a lavish mansion, the film skips from one unbelievable development to the next, with Jerrica/Jem becoming a global sensation after two pop-up concerts. Admittedly, Peeples is reasonably charming as the reluctant superstar, while Lewis is fun to watch as the bitchy, narcissistic pop mogul. But the film is just too long and unconvincing, offering very little in terms of drama or believability.
