Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

In this drama of 70-something lifestyle dilemmas and the New York property market, elderly couple Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton contemplate selling the Brooklyn apartment they've lived in for over 40 years. As the film's original US title - 5 Flights Up - suggests, the stairs may soon get too much for them, but without any clear idea where to go next, an ailing beloved mongrel to contend with and the pull of some many memories, they're in a quandary. Typically amenable performances from the leads make all this watchable up to a point, but the material is decidedly stretched out over feature length. Churning through a repetitive series of viewings and open houses, it eventually turns a local "terrorist" scare into a blatant and trite post-9/11 plot device where a fugitive with an Islamic name potentially impacts on homebuyers' confidence. Freeman and Keaton's recollections of their own challenging marital history as a pioneering mixed-race couple ring far more true, but this bitty, slightly exasperating serio-comic offering leaves that strand tantalisingly underdeveloped.
