Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Stylish, sleek, sharp and almost glib, this terrific debut by writer/director Justin Simien is a streamlined satire that swaps subtlety for jaw-dropping honesty. Dear White People is the title of a controversial campus radio show where a student host (Tessa Thompson) takes smart swipes at race and culture in a fictional American Ivy League college. Trying to thrive in the ever-swirling white/black divide are her handsome, political ex (Brandon P Bell), a quiet, bass-voiced gay nerd (Tyler James Williams) and a social media wannabe (Teyonah Parris). By examining America's social ills in microcosm using a seriously talented cast, succulent photography and a snappy pace, Simien has crafted a fresh, alluring commentary on stereotypes and real people - it's a small film that's kind of a big deal.
