Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Steering clear of the gore that usually drives his work, Hostel director Eli Roth comes unstuck with this silly, unconvincing and repetitive home-invasion shocker. Married architect Keanu Reeves takes pity on the two lost party-goers (Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas) who appear on his doorstep soaked through and needing a taxi. Once invited inside they seduce him, trash the place, tie him up and begin their mission of his total degradation. It's based on the 1977 cult exploitation flick Death Game (original star Colleen Camp cameos as a visiting masseuse), but the overdone twisted humour continually undercuts the psychological horror and social commentary that Roth is aiming for. Downtown Santiago masquerading as suburban California doesn't help. Nor can Reeves bring any credibility to his sloppily written role, which trades in dumb clichés about sexuality, female empowerment and alpha-male capabilities - though his pizza rant is quite the hilariously awful highlight.
