Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Julia Stiles and Scott Speedman play the tormented couple with cause to regret moving to Colombia to run the family business in this haunted-house horror. Everything seems fairly idyllic until supernatural shenanigans put their little girl (Pixie Davies) at the mercy of mysterious masked phantoms. Viewers unnerved by "children in peril" storylines will get the jitters but those with stronger constitutions won't be too bothered by creaky doors, sudden power cuts or thunderstorms, not when intense shockers like Sinister or Insidious are around to scare the bejesus out us. Spanish director Lluís Quílez's first feature certainly looks good (thanks to the Bogota locations) and is not bereft of atmosphere, but it soon begins to lumber along, even when the panicky parents have something to get panicky about. It's a shame because the cast, including Stephen Rea as Stiles's shifty dad, is a good one.
