Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Though it deals with many of the same issues as many Judd Apatow comedies- how to have a sex life while being the parents of young children - The Overnight has more modest ambitions and, at a lean 79 minutes, doesn't overstay its welcome. Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling star as Alex and Emily, a couple who move to LA and meet the ridiculously bohemian Kurt (Jason Schwartzman) while their son is at a children's party. Their kids connect, so Kurt invites them to dinner with his "actress" wife (Judith Godrèche) and, as the evening wears on, things take a turn for the bizarre. Scott and Schilling are the heart of the film, being naive out-of-towners who are alternately dazzled and appalled by their hosts' arty lifestyle, their horrified faces giving the film its awkwardly funny comic highlights. But the movie really belongs to the weirdly adorable Schwartzman, who literally lets it all hang out as the absurdly well-endowed Kurt.
