Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

An identity crisis is at the heart of this peppy, enjoyably cheeky thriller that's anchored by Kevin Costner as a convicted sociopath. The breathless opening set-up sees Ryan Reynolds's undercover CIA agent being chased across London, but his luck runs out. Unfortunately for his boss (Gary Oldman, frothing at the mouth), the whereabouts of a cyber-terrorist (Michael Pitt) remain locked inside Reynolds's vegetating brain. Enter science whizz Tommy Lee Jones with guinea pig Costner, whose faulty frontal lobe is implanted with Reynolds's memories. But soon Costner is on the lam, wreaking havoc across town after remembering a bag of cash Reynolds has stashed away. Director Ariel Vromen adopts a Euro-grit, Bourne-like aesthetic that is slightly at odds with the Face/Off-style high concept, but in the midst of the rollicking violence and obvious softer scenes - where Costner develops "feelings" for Reynolds's wife (Wonder Woman Gal Gadot) - there's a good dose of humour. It's all knowingly played by the cast, as in the scene where Costner lashes out and then orders a latte, his victim begging to know: "What kinda man punches someone in a patisserie, you animal!"
