Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The consequences of a nerdy Florida teen's infatuation with the free-spirited girl across the street shape this adaptation of the young adult fiction bestseller by John Green. Nat Wolff's protagonist is far too uptight and well-behaved to hang out with Cara Delevingne's startlingly independent night-owl, but the one evening when she does call on his help for a revenge spree against an errant beau proves a pivotal moment in his deepening affections - and the catalyst for her sudden subsequent disappearance. Credibility isn't the movie's strongest suit, from these squeaky-clean plushly moneyed teenage lives in general to Delevingne's absurdly precious Whitman-reading dream girl in particular, but there are some useful insights into the downside of youthful romantic obsession. Meanwhile, Wolff's coterie of high-school chums are amiable enough to warrant comparison with those of the John Hughes era. They leave us feeling that these too are high-school days worth remembering.
