Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Omar Sy, the breakout star of 2011 French hit Untouchable, reteams with the film's directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano for this vivid look at modern Parisian life. Here he plays Senegalese chef Samba, whose struggle for legal residency takes a turn for the worse when he's sent to a detention centre. However, he soon attracts the attention of a volunteer (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who's using her time there to recover from executive burnout and helps him to get out. It's a film that ricochets between opportunity, hope and despair, but Nakache and Toledano maintain a light touch as they tackle the serious issue of stress across immigration, social services and the corporate boardroom. Strong performances from Sy, Gainsbourg (and an unexpected comedic turn from A Prophet star Tahar Rahim) flesh out this engaging, believable tale set in an anonymous world of backrooms, hotels and kitchens that few tourists never see. Kudos should also go to Youngar Fall, a non-actor (and real-life retired chef), on his excellent debut as Samba's hard-working uncle.
