Dylan O'Brien returns as dashing teen saviour Thomas who, after leading a ragtag bunch of kids out of a giant mechanical maze, encourages them to bust out of a high-security facility into a post-apocalypse world. Back in the director's chair, Wes Ball makes the most of a bigger canvas, filling it with ruined cities, sweeping stormy deserts and less convincingly, zombies, as the gang searches for resistance fighters who have also escaped the clutches of Patricia Clarkson's cold-blooded scientist. The action set pieces - like the undead hordes - come thick and fast, and the tone is a shade darker. However, Thomas lacks complexity, having overcome self-doubt in the first film, while the absence of Will Poulter (to question his leadership) is keenly felt. It's only towards the end that he's asked to weigh the value of the few against the many who are succumbing to a lethal virus. Still, with so many high-octane thrills, fans will be left breathless ahead of the final leg of the journey, The Death Cure, due out in 2018.

A group of children who escaped from an isolated community at the centre of a mysterious labyrinth find themselves in a desolate wasteland. As they seek the truth about the organisation that imprisoned them, they face a series of terrible dangers. Sci-fi adventure based on the second of James Dashner's series of novels, starring Dylan O'Brien and Kaya Scodelario.
