Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A highly informative and engrossing look behind the runway as a legendary fashion brand modernises while trying to honour its heritage. Director Frédéric Tcheng has access-all-areas in 2012 when Belgian menswear wunderkind Raf Simons moves from the Jil Sander label to become creative director of the House of Dior and is expected to produce his first haute-couture line in just eight weeks. From concept to catwalk, Simons is a taskmaster dealing with harassed staff, rich-client demands getting in the way of his collection and intense pressure to meet the star-studded show deadline. Judicially interwoven through these often surprisingly suspenseful proceedings is archive footage of Christian Dior during his 1947 "New Look" revolution and narrations from his 1956 memoir. Featuring celebrity clips of Marlene Dietrich, Marion Cotillard, Sharon Stone and Vogue editor Anna Wintour, it's put together with all the style and elegance expected from such an atelier-driven subject.
