The most potent and mysterious of all emotional states comes under the microscope in this slim but enchanting documentary from British director Kim Longinotto. The film combines archive footage with excerpts from features and shorts, all set to a woozily romantic Richard Hawley soundtrack. Love Is All is a humorous, perhaps too frivolous, look at lust, crushes and courtship over the past century or so - less a lesson in love, more a celebration of what it inspires. Fusing clips from early cinematic gems like Piccadilly and The Lure of Crooning Water with later works including My Beautiful Laundrette and Brick Lane, it shows its subject as a liberating force, as universal and without prejudice, crossing class and cultures. The dark side is also here, though, with the associated judgements and jealousies, and the unvarnished joy of real love is contrasted with the heightened, stylised movie version. It's a charming, appealingly orchestrated illustration of a simple message: times may change but love is eternal.
