Our Score
Like a feel-good Disney classic set in a gritty Uganda slum, this brilliantly uplifting tale is something of a one-off. The action is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi (newcomer Madina Nalwanga), a poor girl from Kampala's Katwe slum who discovers she has an aptitude for chess, one that her coach (David Oyelowo) believes could take her away from her hand-to-mouth existence. Her mother (Lupita Nyong'o), however, has doubts about the plan. Anchored by terrific performances by Oyelowo and Nyong'o and a killer real-life rags-to-riches story (the real Mutesi later became a chess champion), the end result is a more nuanced and positive depiction of Africa than we normally see on screen, though it still includes some heart-stopping moments of tragedy and tension. Maybe it runs a little long and perhaps some of the child actors are a little unpolished, but overall it's an assured move into new territory by the House of Mouse.

The life of a poor Ugandan youngster is changed forever when she is introduced to the game of chess. Drama, starring David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong'o and Madina Nalwanga.
