The latest instalment in the ensemble comedy series might be the best one yet. Returning to Calvin's Barbershop, the film takes us back to the South Side of Chicago, where the neighbourhood has taken a turn for the worse. Calvin (Ice Cube) and his staff are growing tired of gang-related violence, so they decide to do something about it, and organise a weekend-long ceasefire to raise public awareness. As with the previous two instalments in the series, most of the action takes place inside the shop, where the stylists discuss a variety of timely issues, including race, gender and sexual politics. Happily, these discussions are funny and well observed, and most of the characters are likeable. The whole thing is familiar, each storyline plays out as you suspect it will, and A Fresh Cut is surprisingly engaging throughout. In short, it may have been a long time (12 years) coming, but Barbershop 3 is much better than expected.
