Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The sword-and-sandal Euro-epics of the 1950s and 60s (often featuring legendary heroes like Hercules, Maciste and Samson) tended to import American beefcake like Steve Reeves or former Tarzan Gordon Scott to play the muscular hero. So, it's curious to find a callow young Roger Moore, just before TV fame as the Saint and a decade before superstardom as James Bond, striding around in a natty line of tunics as the eponymous founder of Rome. He's the main attraction of this meandering adventure... despite some nice scenery and hordes of scantily dressed starlets as the Sabine women abducted by Moore and his desperate Roman singletons. The fact there are few battle scenes to quicken the pulse, reams of (badly dubbed) dialogue and misplaced humour in the form of a myopic Mr Magoo-like comedy sidekick (Francis Blanche) doesn't help either. Nevertheless, Moore remains an oasis of suave good looks in an ocean of mediocrity.
