The traditional road movie gets a quirky spin in this comedy drama from writer/director Duncan Tucker. Starring an Oscar-nominated Felicity Huffman (from TV's Desperate Housewives), it charts the emotional and physical journey taken by pre-op transsexual Bree (formerly Stanley) after discovering that she has a 17-year-old son (Kevin Zegers) from her one and only sexual encounter with a woman. After being told that she must face up to her parental responsibilities before having long-awaited sex-change surgery, Bree embarks on a cross-country trip to bail the delinquent teen out of jail and then drive him back to LA. The uneasy relationship building that follows has an uneven humour and poignancy, with acidic banter and predictable mishaps given added weight by Bree's struggle to keep her secrets hidden. Tucker's attempt to combine serious identity issues with the sensibilities of a smart-mouthed buddy flick does have its awkward moments, but Huffman's outstanding performance holds it all together.
