Joel and Ethan Coen's unashamed screwball comedy - the presence of George Clooney links it to
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
- is a dizzy, saturated hooray to Hollywood. Josh Brolin does great, stoic work as a studio fixer in early 1950s Burbank whose headaches over a nonstop 24-hour period include the kidnapped star (Clooney) of a costly Roman epic, a spat with highly strung English director Ralph Fiennes over the casting of singing cowboy Alden Ehrenreich, a scandal scented by Tilda Swinton's twin Hedda Hopper-style gossip columnists and the pregnancy of unmarried musical mermaid Scarlett Johansson. In place of a cohesive plot we get a plate-spinning exercise, but a thrilling and frequently hilarious one. Aided by on-message regulars cinematographer Roger Deakins, costumier Mary Zophres and composer Carter Burwell, the Coens re-create the CinemaScope age before our very eyes, with pitch-perfect movie parodies, including two flawless dance routines, one led by a cheerily homoerotic Channing Tatum in a sailor suit. It may not have a lot to say - other than: hey, the movies are just swell - but it's all executed with true love.
An executive in 1950s Hollywood is employed to bury scandals, solve problems and ensure everything goes to plan for the studio. In one fraught day, he has to contend with the kidnapping of the leading man from the set of an ancient Roman epic, a musical star's secret pregnancy, and a director who has objects to having a miscast actor forced on him. The Coen brothers' comedy, starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson and Ralph Fiennes.
