Review

Our Score
Alfred Hitchcock's third talkie is a creaky murder mystery, co-adapted by Hitch's wife Alma Reville from a novel and a play by Clemence Dane and Helen Simpson. Herbert Marshall does well in only his second sound film as a juror who conducts his own inquiries after he suspects an actress isn't a killer. Without giving too much away, the dénouement was considered rather daring in its day, as was the use of a stream-of-consciousness voiceover, which established Hitchcock as one of the most inventive of sound directors. However, some 70 years on, the acting seems rather stagey and the whodunnit isn't particularly taxing. But a fascinating exercise, none the less.
