Our Score
War of the Worlds meets The Hurt Locker in director Jonathan Liebesman's down-and-dirty alien-invasion flick. Aaron Eckhart stars as a burnt-out marine who leads a misfit platoon (that includes Avatar's Michelle Rodriguez) against intergalactic aggressors in need of Earth's water for fuel. The intriguing gimmick here is filming the hectic military operations from the soldiers' point-of-view, creating newsreel-type immediacy. However, the repetitive ground manoeuvres and sketchy characterisation of the laughably gung-ho soldiers mean that most of the frantic displays of jerky firepower are more tedious than exciting. The allegorical nods to what's going on in Afghanistan wear a bit thin, too. Nevertheless, it's a watchable action epic with visual power punches coming from the Californian vistas of destruction, weird mechanical weaponry and craft (inspired by District 9), and a slimy autopsy to figure out how the deadly intruders can be killed.

Summary

The Earth is bombarded by what appear to be meteors, but turn out to be the vanguard of an alien invasion force. As America's west coast comes under heavy attack, a platoon of soldiers is sent in to fight off the aliens and rescue civilians - but the troops have only a few hours to complete their mission before the area is bombed. Sci-fi thriller, with Aaron Eckhart and Ramon Rodriguez.
