Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day decide to be their own bosses in this workmanlike sequel to the 2011 comedy. The story sees the trio forced into bankruptcy by greedy businessman Christoph Waltz, and then decide to kidnap his son (Chris Pine). It offers wide scope for silliness, and the laughs come off the conveyer belt at a steady rate, but they're of varying quality. Director/co-writer Sean Anders (who also co-wrote We're the Millers) usually takes the easy route to a punchline and only works hard to be politically incorrect - especially when it comes to Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston reprising their roles. Mostly, he lets the leading trio pull up the slack with their improvised bickering, and occasionally gifts them a decent gag. If the comedy isn't as dark as the first film aspired to be, it's at least more even in tone, and the would-be kidnappers are good value.
