Britannia Hospital

Britannia Hospital

Lindsay Anderson (1982)

15 Certificate

Our Score
Director Lindsay Anderson's top-heavy symbolism all but crushes the satirical life out of this attempt to lampoon the state of the nation, with a run-down hospital expecting a royal visit to celebrate its 500th anniversary used as a metaphor for Britain's moral decay. Media hacks, strike-bent workers, bureaucratic chaos and sinister laboratory experiments are Anderson's targets, although the burlesque humour makes it seem closer to "Carry On Casualty". Malcolm McDowell, Anderson's favourite hero in such films as If... and O Lucky Man!, is the journalist who wanders through NHS chaos in a film saved by some of Britain's finest character actors, including Leonard Rossiter, Graham Crowden, Jill Bennett and cherubic Joan Plowright. Don't expect to find wit as sharp as a hospital scalpel; this seems happier using a meat cleaver.

Comedy about a hospital's attempts to celebrate its 500th anniversary despite complications posed by protest groups, abrasive patients and a mad doctor. The all-star cast includes Malcolm McDowell, Leonard Rossiter, Graham Crowden, Fulton Mackay, Joan Plowright, Robin Askwith, Alan Bates and Arthur Lowe.
