Lethal Weapon made Shane Black a Hollywood hotshot at 23 years old, and he went on to earn millions of dollars for his action-packed scripts for The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight. Nearly two decades on, he turns his hand to directing - but this crime comedy offers more than just routine thrills. It's a hilarious game of nudge nudge, wink wink, with the compelling Robert Downey Jr as a petty thief who winds up playing gumshoe. He guides us through a tangled murder case with his playful voiceover assuring: "Don't worry. I saw Lord of the Rings - I'm not going to end this 17 times." Val Kilmer helps him navigate the twists and turns as top private eye "Gay" Perry, who's armed with a brilliant battery of one-liners of his own: "Any questions... hesitate to call!" It may just be a fly-by-night fancy, but this quirky noir still packs more heat than your average action thriller.
