Review

Our Score
This second of several film adaptations of Victor Herbert's light opera earned a couple of Oscar nominations (for its costumes and score), but it isn't a patch on the classic Laurel and Hardy version. Personally produced by Walt Disney, this was the studio's first live-action musical, but there's a distinct lack of magic. The special effects that allow Tommy Sands to lead an army of toy soldiers to rescue Annette Funicello from the grasp of evil Ray Bolger are clever enough, but Jack Donohue's direction is uninspired and the overall effect is stodgy rather than spectacular.

Summary

A scheming villain plans to disrupt the wedding of a piper's son by having him killed so he can marry the bride himself. But his henchmen sell the groom to gypsies, from whom he finally escapes to return and save the girl he loves from a forced marriage. Fantasy, starring Ray Bolger, Tommy Sands and Annette Funicello.
