The Absent-Minded Professor

The Absent-Minded Professor

Robert Stevenson (1961)

U Certificate

Our Score
This warm-hearted slice of Americana stars likeable Fred MacMurray as the inventor of flying rubber, with wicked Keenan Wynn as the cad who wants to steal it. As always in Disney films of this period, there's much pleasure to be had from the supporting cast, which here includes veteran clown Ed Wynn (father of Keenan), Meet Me in St Louis's Leon Ames and Elliott Reid, the long-forgotten leading man of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The image of the flubber-powered family car crossing the Moon so inspired a young Steven Spielberg that he copied it to provide the most potent shot in ET, and eventually used it as the logo of his company, Amblin.

An eccentric inventor creates a lighter-than-air substance and uses it to make his car fly, attracting the attention of an unscrupulous spy ring. Disney fantasy comedy, starring Fred MacMurray, Tommy Kirk and Nancy Olson.
