Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Though it is not directly the subject of this film, the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia provides the backdrop for this intelligent and surprisingly sensitive meditation on the way our society and its various media react to violent crime. Daniel Brühl stars as Thomas, a once-promising film-maker whose career has stalled. Asked to develop a script based on a notorious trial in Italy, Thomas agrees to the project, but, as a divorced father with a young daughter of his own, he soon suffers a crisis of conscience. Loosely split into three movements - based on the Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise of Dante's Divine Comedy - The Face Of An Angel finds Thomas coming to terms with the unthinkable: the death of a loved one in the most devastating circumstances. Helping him find his way are Kate Beckinsale, as worldly reporter Simone, and model Cara Delevingne as a British student who rekindles his faith in humankind.
