Opposites attract for Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart in this affable remake of the 2001 romantic comedy Mostly Martha. Kate Armstrong (Zeta-Jones) is a no-nonsense chef who keeps a lid on her emotions, even after her sister dies and leaves daughter Zoe (Abigail Breslin) in her care. Eckhart plays the laid-back sous-chef who eventually begins to melt the heart of our uptight heroine. Zeta-Jones is initially tough to like - it's not until Breslin (who made such an impression in Little Miss Sunshine) moves in that the mood of the movie is raised. Generally, director Scott Hicks (Shine) balances the bitter and the sweet beautifully, although the romance with Eckhart's too-good-to-be-true hunk does have its cloying moments. Hicks is much better at capturing the excitement during dinner service at the restaurant and throws in plenty of mouthwatering close-ups. It's these touches and the sincerity of his approach (in not always going for the easy gag) that make the occasional cheesy moment a tad more palatable.
