Imagine Bad Lieutenant meets Regarding Henry and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. That must have been the pitch for Until Death, an unusual if not very competent addition to the Belgian star's CV. Van Damme dresses down to play corrupt New Orleans cop Anthony Stowe, a bleary-eyed heroin addict who ends up in a coma after being shot in the head. Spending some time in a vegetative state does wonders for Stowe's sense of morality and it's not long before he's back on his feet and looking for redemption - something complicated by the fact that Stephen Rea's camp villain has kidnapped his pregnant wife (Selina Giles, with an obvious sofa cushion under her vest). Mistakenly confusing the set-up for something approaching serious drama, director Simon Fellows (Second in Command) unwisely spends too long on Van Damme's slurring post-coma rehabilitation and not enough time on the shoot-'em-up gun battles.

A heroin-addicted New Orleans detective is shot in the head by a drug lord and lapses into a coma. On regaining consciousness he discovers the man responsible for putting him in hospital has kidnapped his pregnant wife, and sets out to rescue her and exact a fitting revenge on her abductor. Action thriller, with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Selina Giles, Mark Dymond and William Ash.
